What is PSTN?

PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), which was introduced in the 1800s, refers to voice-oriented public telephone networks. This network provides the infrastructure for public telecommunication. Information is transmitted through a serpentine network of copper wires.

For the last two hundred years, this has been everyone’s primary means of telephone communication, but with the rise of VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), the PSTN is becoming a thing of the past.

What’s replacing ISDN?

As we mentioned above, VoIP has had a significant rise over the years. VoIP allows you to make and receive calls, as well as other multimedia sessions over the internet. VoIP converts your analogue calls into data and then travels over the public or private IP (Internet Protocol) network.

For VoIP to work, we will need SIP trunks, which will enable you to connect your phone systems to the public phone network through an IP system.

So, how is this switch going to happen?

By 2025 all PSTN connections will be terminated. This termination means that we will all be required to switch to either VoIP or SIP. Before ISDN is switched off for good, you will need to port your numbers from one provider to another.

Now is the ideal time to begin your preparations for the switch-off. You will need to consider whether your phone system is IP compatible and due to the heavy reliability on broadband you will need to ensure that you have a secure and stable internet connection.
